Chaat is the most common form of guilty treat that no one can resist while passing by. It is an umbrella term for a variety of roadside meals that often include some form of fried dough with various seasonings that provide a spicy, acidic, or salty flavor; however, some chaats are sweet too. Often, to avoid roadside food, people make chaats at home, and this is one of the easiest chaats to make at home and requires no cooking skills. If you have both the sweet and green chutneys ready, making aloo tikki is simple, and constructing the chaat is even simpler.
What is Aloo Tikki Chaat?

The chatpata meal aloo tikki chaat is quite excusite. Crispy fried potato patties are topped with tangy-sweet tamarind chutney, spicy green chutney, and curd(yogurt) in aloo tikki chaat. On top, some people even sprinkle pomegranate arils or sev. Because I have prepared this in Delhi-style, the capital state of India, I haven’t added sev or pomegranates. However, if you wish, you totally can.
This is one of the must-try Indian street food fares with vibrant condiments, some sweet and others spicy. Aloo tikki has become one of the most famous potato snacks in North India over the years.
You can this aloo tikki chaat healthy by simply air frying the tikkis and not shallow or deep frying them. In general, aloo tikki on the street is fried in enormous amounts of oil, use less oil to fry each batch of your aloo tikkis making it healthier.
Notable Ingredients At A Glance

For The Tikkis
Potatoes – Russet or young potatoes can be used for preparing aloo tikkis; just be sure to boil and peel them first.
Bread Crumbs – I prepared my own bread crumbs from whole wheat bread, but you can also use store-bought. The bread crumbs add a nice crispy exterior to the tikkis.
Green Chilies or Serrano Peppers – Use green chilis or serrano peppers as per your tolerance for spice. But chat mostly tastes good when spicy.
Oil – You will need high-heat oil for the tikkis. So, you can use oils like flaxseed, avocado, or any other oil you choose.
For The Chaat
Tamarind Chutney – This chaat tastes best with homemade tamarind chutney. However, you can also use store-bought chutney.
Yogurt – Add lots of yogurts to make it relishing. If you are using greek yogurt, add some water to make it thin. The chaat asks for a thin yogurt consistency.
Green Chutney – Green chutney is something you will always find in my fridge. It is easy to make and goes with literally anything.
Chaat Masala – It adds a zing to the chaat.
Cilantro – Garnish the chaat with some fresh cilantro.
How To Prepare Aloo Tikki Chaat?
Begin by boiling the potatoes. Remove the skin from the boiling potatoes and thoroughly grate them.

Bread crumbs, green chilies, salt, and coriander leaves should all be combined next. Form a dough by combining all of the ingredients. Grease your palms with oil and shape little circular patties (tikkies). This proportion yields approximately 10 tikkis.
Heat some oil in a skillet and shallow fry the tikkis one at a time. Fry both sides until golden brown.
Assembling the chaat
Place the tikkies side by side on a plate/platter, as shown in the image. Pour some yogurt that has been whisked over them.
Top with tamarind chutney, green chutney, and cilantro. Finally, top with chaat masala. Depending on the number of tikkis on each dish, you can make numerous plates with this amount.

Some Expert Tips For Preparing Aloo Tikki Chaat
- Always prepare and set aside all of your chaat components at the beginning. It makes assembling easy.
- Prepare your chutneys – I make Cilantro Chutney from scratch, but I buy Tamarind Chutney from the shop.
- Make sure to grate the potatoes rather than mashing them. This is to ensure that the potato dough is smooth and devoid of lumps.
- Always fry potato Tikki over low-medium heat to acquire the correct color and crisp texture.
- Potato tikki can also be fried in an air fryer. Brush both sides of the uncooked potato tikki with oil. Place them in an air fryer basket.
