Amti Dal is a Maharastrian dal recipe that is slightly spicy, sweet and sour. Amti can be eaten with rice but its best companion is Puran poli.



  • 1 cup Chana/Bengal gram dal
  • ½ cup Coconut – grated
  • 1 Tomato – finely chopped
  • 1 tbsp Garlic – finely chopped
  • 4 Green chili – slit length wise
  • 1 tsp Mustard/rai seeds
  • 1 tsp Cumin/Jeera seeds
  • 1 tsp Salt


  1. Wash and soak the dal for 2 hours.
  2. Pressure cook the dal with one and a half cup of water, salt and turmeric powder. After one whistle reduce the heat and cook for 10 more minutes.
  3. Let all the pressure release then take out the dal.
  4. Once the dal is boiled keep it aside.
  5. Now let us prepare the tadka for the dal.
  6. Heat a kadai add oil.
  7. Add mustard seeds, cumin and let it splutter.
  8. Now add the garlic and sauté for 2 minutes on low flame till the raw smell of garlic goes.
  9. Add the tomatoes and salt and sauté for a minute.
  10. Now add coconut.
  11. Sauté on low heat for 2 minutes, add green chilies.
  12. Once the masala is cooked add the boiled dal and mix well.
  13. Bring it to a boil and let it simmer on low heat for 5 minutes.
  14. Put some ghee if you want to or else enjoy it as it is garnished with some curry leaves.Amti Dal Image
