Coffin Sandwich

It doesn’t take long for new parents to realize that Halloween involves more than just trick-or-treating at night. The day-long affair and preparations call for an easy lunch for the kids that can be made spooky to fit the theme of the holidays but are also easy to make and tasty to eat. A simple sandwich offers an easy way out of this problem. Make it in the shape of a coffin, and you’ve got yourself a way to give the kids a tasty nightmare and prevent yourself from going through one.

What is a Coffin Sandwich?

These are exactly what they sound like. Bread “coffins” stuffed with peanut butter and mixed fruit jam to create the perfect Halloween lunch for your tiny skeleton monsters. The bread can be stamped out using coffin-shaped cookie cutters or cut using a knife. At its core, it’s a simple peanut butter and jelly sandwich, which makes it incredibly easy to make. The upside is that the kids can make it themselves and decorate it as they wish, making it a fun activity and lowering your burden. Depending on the method you choose to cut out the coffins from the bread slices, this recipe can essentially be made by children without any supervision. And that just means there’s one less thing that you have to worry about when keeping an eye out for your little skeleton monsters.

Notable Ingredients at a Glance

Bread – Any kind of bread can be used in the recipe. However, you would want something that is firm enough to take the peanut butter and jelly and not disintegrate. We will be trimming off the brown part of the bread, and in most cases, the white part tends to fall apart if it gets too wet. You will need two slices of bread per Coffin Sandwich.

Peanut Butter – Chunky or smooth, any peanut butter will be good to go. If you or your kids are allergic to peanut butter, you can use any other substitute. You’ll need about a tablespoon to spread on both slices of the bread.

Jam or Jelly –  The essential part here is the color. Strawberry, Raspberry, or mixed fruit jams are usually bright red in color. Use whatever you have on hand. You’ll need about a tablespoon for the look of blood.

Carrot strips or Cheddar cheese – To decorate the bread slice on top, you can put small strips of carrot or cheddar cheese in the shape of a cross. Cut one strip to be smaller than the other and arrange them as a cross on the coffin sandwich.

How to prepare a Coffin Sandwich?

Cut the bread in a coffin shape. As I’ve said earlier, you can use a Cookie Cutter or cut it out using a knife. Repeat with remaining bread slices.

Spread a thick layer of peanut butter on both slices of bread.

Apply the jam on one side of both slices. Place one on top of the other and press gently so the jam oozes out a bit.

For the cross, take two carrot or cheddar cheese strips, one cut slightly smaller than the other.

Place in a cross shape on top of the sandwich.

Enjoy your scary treat, and get ready for trick or treating!
