Kaali Dal is a hearty tasty dal for the winter! It is very tasty recipe and it is very easy to prepare it.



  • 1 cup Whole Black Gram/Sabut Urad Dal
  • ¼ cup Rajma/Kidney beans
  • 1 cup Tomato puree
  • 1 tbsp Ginger garlic paste
  • 1/4 tsp Asafetida/hing
  • 1 tsp Coriander powder
  • 1½ tsp Turmeric powder (1tsp while boiling the dal and ½ tsp while cooking the dal)
  • 1 tsp Chili powder
  • 1 tsp Garam masala (I have used MDH garam masala)
  • ½ tsp Kasuri methi
  • 1 tbsp Ghee/Butter
  • 4 tbsp Fresh cream
  • 2 tsp Salt (1tsp while boiling the dal and 1tsp while cooking the dal)
  • 2 tbsp Mustard oil (you can use butter as well for cooking the dal but I prefer to use mustard oil)


  1. Wash and soak the urad dal and rajma for 7 to 8 hours or overnight. Soak them separately
  2. After 8 hours drain all the excess water from the dal and wash it under running water.
  3. Put the dal n rajma along with salt and turmeric powder in a pressure cooker with 4 cups of water.
  4. After one whistle reduce the heat and cook on low heat for atleast 30 minutes for the dal and rajma to cook properly. Switch off the heat after 30 minutes of cooking. Let the pressure cooker release its pressure on its own. Check to see that the dal is cooked completely. Keep it aside.
  5. Now heat a kadai add oil.
  6. Add ginger garlic paste and saute it on medium heat for 3 minutes.
  7. Add tomato puree and saute again for 3 minutes.
  8. Add asafetida, salt, turmeric powder, coriander powder, chili powder and mix well.
  9. Now add the garam masala and cook on medium heat for 8 to 9 minutes.
  10. Add kasuri methi and mix.
  11. Once the masala is cooked add the boiled dal and mix well
  12. Add 2 cups of water and bring it to a boil on high heat.
  13. Now reduce the heat and let it simmer on low heat for 20 to 25 minutes. The more you cook the better will be the consistency.
  14. Add ghee/butter after 25 minutes and simmer for 2 more minutes.
  15. Switch off the heat and add fresh cream, mix well. Do not heat after adding the cream.
  16. You Kali dal is now ready to serve, garnish with some fresh coriander and cream and enjoy with naan, roti or paratha.Kali Dal Image
